Does Love Have a Place in the World of Work?

“Love is somehow the key that unlocks the door which leads to ultimate reality.”

Dr. Martin Luther King spoke of how absolutely critical love is as an element for doing ... frankly, anything worthwhile. And, how often we tend to shy away from the word “love” in the world of work.

Passion is fine. Drive, absolutely. Care and kindness? They’re slowly becoming more acceptable. But love? That sounds like something for your personal life.

But is it? We’d beg to differ. Love is a universal factor that brings us together as humans, and as such, it’s untenable to try to completely cut it out of our work. After all, we’re still the humans doing the work!

And, we’ve seen from experience just how much power love brings to a project by the team working together.

At PointNorth, we define love as to cherish, connect and care deeply. As a People First organization, we are intentional in the way we ensure we understand the past, we consider the perspectives of others, and we work to connect on a deeper relationship level than a transaction because we care deeply. We work and live in our community. We love our work and we love the people we work with! No shame, no judgement in using the word love. We know love is the difference maker.

So this month, as we’re surrounded by messages about romantic love, we’d invite you to expand your definition, just a little, and think about how love makes an impact in what you do—and how you can actively tap into this deeply human, universal power to do more good work, together.
